Brief

Buderus heating systems were installed in the new stadia in Lisbon, Leiria, Braga and Porto as part of the preparations for the European Football Championship, Euro 2004, held in Portugal. The new Estádio da Luz (Stadium of Light) in the capital, Lisbon, can entertain some 65,000 fans and as part of Euro 2004, the final, quarter final and four group games were staged here.

This, the largest football venue in Portugal, is also the home of the famous football club, Benfica Lissabon. The new, ultra-modern arena was built alongside the original, legendary venue of this long established club. The old stadium was originally to be renovated, but after consideration, it was decided that it would be better to demolish it.

When designing the new venue, architects endeavoured to retain one important characteristic of the old stadium - true to its name, the new one, too, is designed so that in good weather, the arena is virtually flooded with sunlight.

Solution

The changing rooms, fitness suite, VIP areas, restaurant and TV studios (total area approx. 100 000 square metres) are heated by three Logano SK725 – 1 070 kW boilers, which also provide hot water. Two Logano
SK725 – 1 320 kW were selected for the adjacent swimming pool installation, and a further Logano SK725-870 was also installed.

Design engineers, Marobal, (Lisbon), carried out the design work and installation was implemented byGerco (Lisbon).
